ECHO
Enforcement
and Compliance History Online
http://www.epa.gov/echo
ECHO is an abbreviation for Enforcement and Compliance History Online.
It is a newly created Website of the Environmental Protection Agency.
ECHO provides comprehensive information
on inspections, violations, and enforcement history at more than 800,000
facilities that are regulated under the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
The site is primarily designed for public users interested in reviewing
the compliance status of local facilities. Users
can determine if facilities in their area are in compliance, when violations
took place, and what enforcement penalties or actions were taken against the
facility.
ECHO’s search engine makes finding the facility easier.
The search engine is separated into two sections.
Users can search by category or by using the quick search feature.
Searching by category allows the user
to browse through all the data, or narrow the search by searching specific
subcategories such as: Air Data,
Water Data, or Hazardous Waste Data. A
quick search can be performed by entering in a zip code, a city, or a state and
narrowed further by checking the type of facility desired.
In searching the site, one should be adventurous and click on all the underlined
links appearing within the pages for the facility chosen.
These links take the user to more in-depth information about the facility
such as the date of problems, actions taken, fines levied, and more.
The
site will be beneficial to grass-root and watch dog organizations and citizens
who want to keep better informed of environmental issues and the environmental
records of facilities within their locale.
